Australians for Native Title launched

By Wendy Robertson

SYDNEY — Four hundred people, including high-profile actors, Aboriginal leaders, TV personalities, singers and sports stars attended the launch of Australians for Native Title on June 16. The organisation was formed to express support for the High Court's decision on native title.

Angela Chan, chairperson of the Ethnic Communities Council NSW, explained that ethnic communities were opposing the 10-point plan because it was an attack on a minority group which could lead, if undefeated, to attacks on other minority groups. She called on all parties contesting elections to preference One Nation last.

Other speakers included sports journalist Peter Fitzsimmons, actor Ruth Cracknell, musician Peter Garrett, Peter Watson from the Anglican Church and Aden Rickway, vice-president of the NSW Aboriginal Lands Council.

The group's membership includes the Federation of Parents and Citizens' Associations of NSW, the Ethnic Communities Council NSW, the Media, Arts and Entertainment Alliance, Greenpeace and the Australian Writers Guild. It joins another similarly named group, "Australians for Native Title and Reconciliation".
