AMWU food and confectionary election result unclear

Issue

BY SUE BOLTON

The ballot for the position of national secretary of the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union food and con- fectionary division has still not been decided. The ballot closed on May 20 and counting was carried out on May 21.

At the close of counting on May 21, militant Workers First candidate Ray Campbell was trailing the incumbent Jenny Dowell by just 16 votes. However, the election result has not been declared by the Australian Electoral Commission because of a dispute between the AEC and AMWU national secretary Doug Cameron over whether or not to count a parcel of votes from Western Australia. There is no food and confectionary division in WA.

It is not known when the ballot will be declared, but, given the close vote, an appeal is likely.
