Aleida Guevara to tour Australia in May

Issue

Pilar Aguilera

Aleida Guevara, the 44-year-old daughter of Ernesto "Che" Guevara, will speak at public meetings in Australia in May. A pediatrician in a Havana children's hospital, she has emerged as a prominent figure in the anti-globalisation and anti-war movements.

Aleida Guevara was the principal speaker at the 25,000-strong European Social Forum in October 2004 and was one of the principal speakers at the 2003 and 2005 World Social Forums in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

During a previous visit to Australia in June 2003, she addressed sell-out meetings in Melbourne and Sydney and received wide media coverage. Her public meetings were the largest in solidarity with Cuba ever held in Australia.

Guevara will speak in Melbourne on May 26 and Sydney on May 28 at public meetings on the topic "Che and the winds of change in Latin America".

In addition to the public meetings, she will also be featured at several bookshops in Melbourne and Sydney where she will launch her new book Chavez: Venezuela and the New Latin America, just published by Ocean Press in Spanish and English-language editions. The new book is based on several extensive conversations she has had with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

She will also launch several new titles by her father, published by Ocean Press in association with the Che Guevara Studies Centre in Havana, including The Motorcycle Diaries (the book of the movie) and Self Portrait.
