Union backs 'no war' resolution

BRISBANE — The Queensland branch conference of the Community and Public Sector Union on December 1-2 strongly endorsed a resolution calling on the Australian government to immediately withdraw all military assistance and troops from the US-led war in Afghanistan. The meeting heard speakers from the Network Opposing War and Racism. Delegates also passed a resolution calling for an end to mandatory detention of refugees.

The conference called for "a public sector-wide campaign to oppose privatisation and fight for all members' jobs" and passed a resolution calling for the CPSU "to embark on a pattern bargaining campaign to win an agreement establishing common conditions across all public sector departments".

International Women's Day still a focus

BRISBANE — The IWD collective is building a vibrant and inclusive march and rally on Saturday, March 9, 2002, starting at King George Square at 3pm.

On December 3, preliminary discussions were held on whether the theme for IWD 2002 should be "women against war and racism". Further discussion on the subject will be held.

It was decided that the IWD march will demand freely available childcare, an end to sexist advertising, full rights for women in prison and no discrimination in access to IVF for lesbians and single women. Phone Kerry on 3255 3912 or Susan on 3831 2644 for details of the next meeting.
