Abattoir axed

By Geoff Spencer

PERTH — Robb Jetty meat workers walked off the job for 24 hours on May 4 with the announcement of the closure of the abattoir and the loss of 220 jobs.

The state Coalition government decision came a week after the announced shutdown of Westrail's Midland workshops. AMIEU state secretary Glenn Ferguson stated that the Liberals were "waging class war against the workers of Western Australia".

The AMIEU is planning a rally in Fremantle on Saturday, May 15, to protest against the planned closure. Everyone is encouraged to attend: "It might be meat workers this week, it was railway workers last week and it will be cleaners in public schools next week and hospitals in the following weeks."
