About the book

The Weight of Witness brings together the voices of Australian and New Zealand healthcare workers who have served in Gaza during the ongoing genocide, preserving frontline testimonies of courage, grief, humanity and resistance in the face of Israel’s devastation. This book bears witness to the horror and trauma that the people of Gaza have endured and to the deliberate destruction of the healthcare system – and pays tribute to the enduring spirt of the Palestinian people.

About the authors

Dr Bushra Othman is a Palestinian Australian General Surgeon from Naarm/Melbourne who is in her final year of colorectal subspecialty training. She has been honoured to complete three medical missions to Gaza over the last two years and was the first Australian Palestinian woman – and Muslim woman – to volunteer as a doctor in Gaza. She is a medical mission coordinator with the Palestinian Australian and New Zealand Medical Association (PANZMA); serves as the Victorian Membership Engagement and Events Lead for the Australian Islamic Medical Association (AIMA); and is a faculty instructor for the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) and regularly teaches surgical trainees and medical students. In 2025 she was recognised by Flinders University with a Distinguished Alumni Award for her humanitarian work in Gaza, and was the recipient of the 2025 Woman of the Year from the Australian Muslim Achievement Awards.

About the moderator

Remah Naji is a Palestinian woman, linguist, education worker, unionist and a lead organiser with Justice for Palestine Magan-djin. Remah has led numerous campaigns confronting Australia's complicity in Gaza's genocide and its weapons manufacturing industry. She keeps the state on its toes and has no intention of stopping.
