Why

War or Public Housing – resist the push to defund essential services

The increasing militarisation and drive to war around the world is taking public money away from essential government spending on things like public housing, education, aged care, childcare and health.

Increased spending on weapons means the money will come from other parts of the budget and as always the most vulnerable in our neo-liberal society will pay the highest cost.

Funding is expected to reach $765 billion over the decade, according to Labor’s 2024 National Defence Strategy plus more announcements on spending around the AUKUS project above and beyond this report.

There is an enormous amount of public funding being channelled by the government to the booming weapons manufacturing industries to reaffirm “the Australian Government’s commitment to manufacturing munitions in Australia”.

Come and hear from our speakers how we can resist the push to become a weapons economy and instead fund essential public services.

Speakers

  • Senator David Shoebridge
  • 3CR presenter Mercedes Zanker
  • Louisa Bassini Inner Melbourne Community Legal
