Why
Adelaide Uni must stop promoting fossil fuel and weapons corporations at its annual Careers Expo, and start backing the industries that build a liveable future.
Every year, our university rolls out the red carpet for companies like Santos, Lockheed Martin, Department of Defence, the ADF, BHP, and BAE Systems to recruit students.
These corporations are not neutral employers. They are central players in industries driving climate collapse, militarisation, displacement, and war. They profit from fossil fuel expansion while communities choke on pollution and burn in worsening heatwaves. They profit from weapons production while civilians overseas, and increasingly at home, pay the price.
Students are told this is about “opportunity.” But opportunity for whom?
As the world accelerates toward oo renewable energy, community-led infrastructure, public health, housing, education, and regenerative industries, fossil fuel and weapons sectors are becoming stranded - economically, politically, and morally. Investing your future in industries tied to ecocide and endless war is not security.
It is a dead end.
Meanwhile, we are distracted by | cost-of-living pressures and rising rents. Young people are pushed toward whatever pays now, without being told the long-term costs - to our climate, our communities, and our own health. Pollution from fossil fuels harms our lungs and hearts. Military production diverts billions away from healthcare, housing, and education. The same systems extracting from the Global South are squeezing us here at home.
We refuse to accept that the only viable careers are those that deepen inequality, destruction, and conflict.
This is our future.
