CZECH REPUBLIC: Communist Youth Movement banned

November 17, 1993
Issue

The government of the Czech Republic has sent a letter to the Communist Youth Movement (KSM) announcing its intention to ban the organisation. The letter justified the move by claiming the KSM's goals interfere with those of Czech political parties, and because the KSM refuses to abandon its commitment to socialist revolution. This follows attempts by right-wing parliamentarians to propose legislation outlawing communist ideas and activities, placing it in the same category as fascism. The Czech Communist Party won 20% of the vote in the 2002 elections and came second in the 2004 European elections. The KSM campaigns against war and racism and for jobs, higher wages and lower education and public transport fees. Protests are being organised at Czech embassies around the world on February 14 to condemn the ban on the KSM.
