Why

On August 25, 2017, around 700,000 Rohingyan people fled Rakhine state in Western Myanmar in the face of genocidal violence from both the military and local Buddhist militia.

Nine years later, millions of Rohingya struggle to survive in neighbouring countries, notably Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh, and in other neighbouring countries like India and Malaysia (where the government recently detained many Rohingya and threatened to refoul thousands back to danger in Myanmar.

This is a humanitarian crisis of genocidal proportions in Australia's neighbourhood. It is shameful how few Rohingya the Anthony Albanese Labor government is resettling (the annual humanitarian intake remains at 20,000 despite Labor "aspiring" to raise it to 27,000). Under Tony Burke's proposals to strip away work and legal appeal rights from asylum seekers, scores of Rohingya will be affected (including those formerly detained on Manus Island or Nauru).

Please join us after Friday afternoon prayers.

Speakers to be confirmed.
