Join us for an afternoon screening of two award-winning documentary films exploring the human cost of nuclear testing worldwide. We are excited to be joined by UK filmmaker, Daniel Everitt-Lock (Our Planet, The People, My Blood), ICAN Ambassador and nuclear veteran descendant, Maxine Goodwin, The Hon Josh Wilson MP, Federal Member for Fremantle, as well as fellow West Australian (now Geneva-based), The Hon Melissa Parke, Executive Director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons.

This documentary follows Alan Owen—Alan Owen, descendant of an Atomic Soldier, fights for nuclear testing victims' rights worldwide. Following his journey through global accounts, he challenges the UK Ministry of Defence in a landmark case seeking recognition.and features testimony from communities The film also includes other nuclear survivors, including Jeremy Lebois from Oak Valley, near Maralinga.

Following activist Tina Cordova, this documentary tells the story of New Mexico's "Downwinders"—predominantly Hispanic and Native American communities who were exposed to radioactive fallout from the 1945 Trinity test, the world's first nuclear detonation. Generations of cancer and decades of government neglect have followed. This is their fight for recognition.
Speaker bios:
Daniel Everitt-Lock is a British-Canadian director and cinematographer based between London and Toronto. He began his career in corporate and commercial production 14 years ago and has since worked as an IATSE 667 Director of Photography and associate member of the CSC, with credits across more than 14 scripted feature films, multiple series, and numerous feature documentaries. He has worked alongside cinematographers including Seamus MacGarvey ASC BSC on HBO's The Nevers. Our Planet, The People, My Blood was accepted into IDFA's Docs for Sale Programme.
The Hon Josh Wilson MP is an Australian Labor Party politician who has served as the Federal Member for Fremantle in Western Australia since 2016. He holds dual ministerial roles as the Assistant Minister for Climate Change and Energy and the Assistant Minister for Emergency Management.
The Hon Melissa Parke is the Executive Director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN). Ms Parke is a former Australian Minister for International Development, and former Australian federal Member of Parliament (2007 to 2016). Prior to being elected to the Australian Parliament, Ms Parke worked as an international lawyer with the United Nations in Kosovo, Gaza, New York and Lebanon (1999 to 2007). Ms Parke served as a member of the UN Group of Eminent Experts on Yemen, mandated by the UN Human Rights Council to investigate violations of international human rights and humanitarian law during the conflict in Yemen (2017-2021). Ms Parke also served as an Ambassador for ICAN Australia (2017-2023).
Maxine Goodwin is an ICAN Ambassador and the daughter of an Australian nuclear veteran. In 1952, Maxine’s father, a Royal Australian Air Force radio technician, was deployed to Onslow, Western Australia, for Operation Hurricane—the first British atomic test in Australia. He was responsible for servicing Dakota aircraft tasked with coastal security monitoring. He later recalled being onboard an aircraft that detected intense radioactivity the day after the detonation. Maxine has spent more than twenty years researching her father’s story and has contributed to arts projects highlighting the experiences of nuclear test veterans and their families.
