Why
On Friday 24th July, the Australian Labor Party holds its National Conference at the Adelaide Convention Centre. IPAN and allies will be outside, asking the question the conference should be debating: why is Australia spending $368 billion on AUKUS — around $13,000 from every Australian — while homes, hospitals, schools and climate action go underfunded?
The first Australian-built submarine won't arrive until the 2040s. Billions have already been sent to shipyards in Britain and the United States. And Australia alone will be left to store high-level nuclear waste that remains deadly for at least 10,000 years — with no site chosen, no plan and no costing.
We are calling on the conference to:
- Scrap AUKUS and the Force Posture Agreement
- Close all US bases in Australia
- Shut the foreign weapons factories
- Fund climate and communities, not war
