Why
It's now almost 13 years since Kevin Rudd and his then immigration Minister Tony Burke infamously pushed through Labor's PNG Solution.
The offshore detention regime was carried on by Abbott, Turnbull and Morrison government's, and shamefully continues under Albanese (with Burke again as home affairs and immigration Minister).
The major parties claimed to care about "lives at sea", yet cared nothing about the many refugees who were killed or killed themselves in these detention hellholes.
Preventing those sent offshore from ever settling permanently in Australia is still cruel bipartisan policy (tripartisan if we now include One Nation).
But those affected (700 of whom live in Australia) are campaigning and speaking out.
Meanwhile, the 2026-27 federal budget includes a blowout in the spending on offshore detention and processing of over $300 million, bringing it to just under $1 billion.
RAC has called this public forum to amplify their voices and their urgent calls for justice.
