Elders Call for Allies to Join Aboriginal Camp

The Yagara Magandjin Aboriginal Corporation (YMAC) Elders will be announcing their official occupation of Barrambin with a “Balkari” (Welcome) Day on Saturday, 16th May.

This may be our last chance to protect this sacred land, before fences are proposed to go up on June 1st, as GIICA takes control of the land. It is fitting that what may be the last major community event, at this site, is being led by Aboriginal people who are returning to occupy this land.

A message from the YMAC Elders.

“Partners, cultural custodians from elsewhere, allies and culture learners are invited to our sacred living country at Barrambin / Victoria Park, the proposed site of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Stadium, to visit or camp.”

YMAC have lodged an application under Section 10 of the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act (ATSIHP) to declare the long-term protection of Barrambin / Victoria Park.

YMAC Elders call for people to come and support their Section 10 application, asserting their human rights to protect cultural heritage and practice. YMAC Elders appreciate supporters camping or visiting in the spirit of truthtelling, reconciliation, healing and peace.

The YMAC Elders acknowledge the rights of Aboriginal people and non-Aboriginal supporters to show solidarity with their Section 10 applications by attending events or camping at Barrambin, to inform Australia and the World about planned acts to destroy ancient springs, waterways, ecosystems, trees, ceremonial sites and original goori-goom (village site).

Aboriginal people and non-Aboriginal allies are invited to support and join these Sovereign Aboriginal camps. These Sovereign camps are a living sacred Aboriginal lore and cultural heritage systems that honours the ancestral connections and importance of Barrambin to the Yagarabul people.”
