This fortnight’s vigil will pay tribute to the journalists murdered by the IDF in Gaza, and to the silencing and demonization of Palestinian voices in Australian media, arts, and academia. “When the truth is silenced, the silence is a lie.”
One year ago, we learned of the death of several prominent journalists in Gaza after their vehicles and tents were targeted by IDF air strikes (including Hossam Shabbat, a 23-year old reporter for Al Jazeera). Since October 2023, over 300 journalists have been killed in Gaza and West Bank, most Palestinian, and most in safe zones, residential areas, or in media tents near hospitals. We are seeing the same pattern in Lebanon in recent weeks.
Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah was infamously uninvited by Adelaide Writers Week earlier this year simply for being a Palestinian-Australian woman, while the abhorrent views of Israeli-American author Thomas Friedmann were welcomed by the Board in 2024. We have seen the consistent demonization of pro-Palestinian protestors and Australian journalists speaking in favour of Palestine in media Australia-wide since 2023. Chris Hedges’ invitation to the National Press Club was rescinded in October 2025 - but the NPC was very happy to host the Israeli Ambassador Hillel Newman this week, who used this platform to defend and celebrate the recently-passed death penalty laws which apply only to Palestinians (not to Israeli’s who commit the same crime), and to commend the IDF on their ‘restraint’ regarding the Palestinian death toll since October 2023.
Join us in solidarity with the Palestinian voices that are so often silenced in Australian media and arts, and in remembrance of the journalists who have given their lives for the truth of Gaza. Wednesday 8 April, 5-6pm at Parliament House, Adelaide/Tarndanya. We stand in support of Palestinian voices. We stand in opposition to the NPC’s double standards. We stand for peace and justice.
This is a silent vigil (no speeches or drums). Bring your flags and keffiyehs - signage will be supplied (we will have photographs of murdered Palestinian journalists for people to hold). All welcome.
