Why
Calling all supporters of Palestine and lovers of Johnny Farnham! Join our Farnsey flash mob for Palestinian liberation!
But what does Farnsey have to do with supporting Palestine?
Well, the Crisafulli government is trying to stifle and intimidate Queenslanders out of publicly supporting Palestine. New legislation has been introduced to criminalise 2 specific phrases that call for Palestinian liberation.
One of these outlawed phrases just so happens to appear in the chorus of Farnsey’s iconic 1988 Aus rock anthem "Two Strong Hearts" (thank you Nordacious for drawing our collective attention to this with your incredible art).
What are we doing?
Blasting Farnsey in King George Square! We'll sing and dance our strong hearts out, to show the absurdity of the new laws with a fun flash mob!
We've got some easy but evocative dance moves to show you, and we'll have lyric sheets ready to go.
Why are we doing it?
Over the last few weeks we've seen state censorship of public artworks, police raids on the homes of citizens and artists, and even a person arrested for wearing a shirt with one of the outlawed phrases.
The intimidation tactics are in full swing so it's time to joyously resist these ridiculous new laws.
Let’s show that our support is stronger than ever for the people of Palestine, that we won’t be distracted away from the fight to end Israeli occupation and end the genocide.
What to wear!
Let's channel the flamboyant Farnsey looks from the 80s!
Double denim. Feathered mullets. Wrap around sunnies. White joggers.
Watermelons playing saxophones. Feel free to bring any elaborate props or contributions of your own!
What are the legal risks?
These new laws are yet to be tested in court, but based on the arrests we have seen so far, we believe it is likely there will be a police presence and a willingness to arrest people using the outlawed phrases.
There is a broad spectrum of ways to participate in this event, from:
- Cheering on the flash mob from the side lines, to
- Loudly singing the chorus of Two Strong Hearts, to
- Choosing to bring something that visibly supports Palestine whilst engaging in the flash mob
We'll start with a short legal briefing so that people can make informed decisions about how to participate in the ways that feel right to them.
We want to acknowledge the Jagera and Turrbal peoples whose lands this event is taking place on, and whose sovereignty was never ceded. We acknowledge that the ongoing occupation and genocide here on this continent is inextricably linked to the continued occupation and genocide in Palestine. Until both these lands are returned to their rightful sovereign peoples, there can be no justice and no peace.
