Why
MediCeram, a key supplier of glove molds to the billion dollar international latex corporation Ansell, is going bankrupt after years of putting its workers through conditions amounting to modern slavery. According to Migrant Welfare Network, workers at MediCeram allege passport confiscation, limited freedom of movement, wage theft and unlawful deductions, debt bondage from exorbitant recruitment costs, unsafe working conditions, verbal abuse, and denial of medical assistance.
Despite Ansell's deep ties across Malaysian production, billions of dollars of revenue and global reputation, it still would rather take the cheap way out and wash its hands of the molds. Ansell's only action has been to abandon the workers whose servitude it relied on. Ansell has profited off modern slavery. When the people found out, it grabbed the bag and ran, leaving workers out to dry in conditions with NO pay, NO work and NO passports.
We demand:
- Release affected workers from the burden of debt
- Ansell must take responsibility for providing fair compensation to deported and affected workers
- Support deported workers in rebuilding a dignified, stable and sustainable life
