Why
Please join us for a night of joyous movement and celebration of Palestinian culture as we learn and dance Dabke, led by Amin from Jafra Dabke - No prior experience required - just bring yourself (and your family / friends / housemates) and a willingness to give it a go!
Dabke is a popular group dance often performed throughout Levantine countries during festivals and celebrations such as weddings and graduations; uniting strangers, friends and neighbours as a means of expressing cultural identity, building social connections, and sharing joy. After the 1948 Nakba and the ongoing displacement and genocide committed by Israel, the Palestinian variation of Dabke has become an expression of Palestinian identity and resistance. Each stamp of the dancer’s foot on the earth expresses a connection to culture and land which cannot be overwritten or broken, resistance to violent colonial powers, and the enduring love and resilience of Palestinians to come together to express happiness and joy in the face of unspeakable atrocities.
In so-called Australia, our knowledge of Palestine is too often overshadowed by an overarching narrative of violence and destruction. Alongside our commitments to protest oppression, it is more important than ever for us to practice, share, and celebrate the vibrant cultural history of our Palestinian neighbours.
Please share this event with your communities, and register your attendance via the link in our bio so we can keep an eye on numbers.
All donations collected at this event will be donated to the volunteer-run charity Olive Kids, an Australian registered foundation that seeks to facilitate financial support, education and medical assistance to Palestinian children. EFTPOS and cash accepted.
