Why

Across Australia, 2017 was a big year for Aboriginal rights issues, including the Uluru declaration for Sovereignty, the unjust jail sentence for the killer of young Elijah Doughty in Kalgoorlie, and the decisions of Fremantle City Council and radio station Triple J to distance themselves from January 26 (Invasion Day).

Demands for justice by Aboriginal peoples for Aboriginal peoples are becoming louder, supported by a growing awareness in the broader population that serious changes are needed to protect and promote the rights of Aboriginal people, communities and culture. With this comes the notion that Australia will not be a just country for all until it undergoes a process of genuine and participatory decolonisation.

What sort of process is needed to achieve justice?

Join us for this discussion with the following guest speakers:

  • Corina Abraham, a Biboolmirn Yorga connected to the Banksia clan of the Beeliar region
  • Uncle Sam Watson, Murri community leader and socialist from Brisbane (via Skype)
  • Chris Owen, UWA historian and author of the recent book ‘Every Mother’s Son is Guilty: A History of Policing in the Kimberley 1892-1905’

We meet on the sovereign lands of the Whajuk Nyoongar people, and pay our respects to elders past, present and future. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land.
