Why
Come along to the Armidale Aboriginal Community Garden in Narwan Village for our second Survival Day gathering. This event is a celebration of the resilience of Anaiwan, Gumbaynggirr and Dhanggati peoples and cultures, as well as all Aboriginal people who now call Armidale home.
We are planning to exhibit historical documents from the Frontier Wars in the so-called "New England" tablelands, alongside photographs and newspaper articles of the East Armidale Aboriginal Reserve in the mid twentieth century. We want to reclaim histories suppressed by colonial institutions and powers, and work to revitalise culture by celebrating the power of family and community to endure in the face of ongoing colonial violence.
We will also be seeking community input on building some shelters at the garden in collaboration with Homes North & Backtrack Youthworks, and seeking suggestions of how best to honour significant community members and families that have shaped the history of this place.
Please join us for a day of free food, dancing, and music around the fire pit.
