On July 6, a private corporate viewing of the British National Museum exhibition on diamonds sponsored by De Beers was protested by supporters of the Kalahari Bushmen, including actor Julie Christie. The Bushmen are fighting eviction from the Kalahari, which is their ancestral home. Soon after they were first forced from the land, De Beers acquired licences to explore for diamonds. The company refused to condemn the treatment of the Bushmen, and its local representative welcomed it. The Bushmen have a current legal case demanding the right to stay.
