Did you know that the use of the word “green” to describe environmental issues started in Australia?
In the 1960s radical socialists led by Jack Mundy were elected leaders of the NSW Builders Labourers Federation. They not only won better pay and conditions for building workers, their radical environmental politics shook all of Australia.
BLF members refused to work on environmentally destructive projects. Their work bans were called “green bans”. Later, German environmental activists took up the word and from there it spread around the world.
The NSW BLF militants demonstrated how radicals can reach out to broader sections of the community and build mass movements defending the environment.
