Greece debates SYRIZA proposal to investigate loans

Issue

The Greek parliament has debated a proposal to establish a committee to investigate loan agreements between previous governments and international lenders, TeleSUR English reported on March 31.

The motion, tabled by ruling anti-austerity party SYRIZA, would examine credit accords dating back to 2009 with organisations including the International Monetary Fund, the European Union and the European Central Bank.

The aim of the committee is to find political responsibility for the execution, implementation and outcomes of these loan agreements. Critics of the agreements say almost none of the loan funds ended up with the Greek people, but were diverted to refilling the pockets of banks.

SYRIZA secretary Christos Mantas said: “We are implementing our commitment and common social demand … to explore the causes and responsibilities of an unprecedented crisis that devastated the vast majority of society.”
