Climate coalition forms

Issue

Inspired by the January 31-February 3 national Climate Action Summit in Canberra, on February 21 WA activists formed the Coalition for a Safe Climate.

Del Weston gave a report from the summit to the meeting. The proposals adopted by the summit — opposing the proposed emissions trading scheme (ETS), advocating a target of 300ppm CO2, and supporting 100% renewables by 2020 — generated some debate but were strongly supported.

The group plans to join March 27 national protests against the ETS, and to organise a World Environment Day rally to launch the campaign for 100% renewable energy by 2020. The coalition's first event will be a March 20 public forum with Climate Code Red co-author David Spratt at the University of Western Australia. For more information see the calendar on page 23.
