Why this matters
The 4.4-hectare flood-free, Council-owned site represents Byron Shire's most significant opportunity to deliver much needed public, social and affordable housing, with potential for 150-300 dwellings.
After extensive community consultation through the 2017-2018 Enquiry by Design process, a vision emerged prioritising diverse and affordable housing for older people, low-income households, and vulnerable populations.
In November 2025, Byron Shire Council unanimously passed a resolution to offer the site to the NSW government to deliver public, social, affordable and Aboriginal housing - avoiding a sale to private developers and keeping this important community land in public hands.
With the Site-Specific Development Control Plan scheduled for public exhibition in early 2026 and a NSW Housing Minister round table discussion on the horizon, this forum will help you understand how to effectively participate in the consultation process.
Who should attend
Anyone who cares about affordable housing, public land, and Mullumbimby's future. Whether you've been involved since the hospital closed in 2016 or you're just learning about the site now, your voice matters. All community members welcome.
