Refugees’ rights meeting

PERTH — On February 27, more than 30 students and staff attended the first meeting at Curtin University called to support the rights of asylum seekers and refugees. The forum was organised by Resistance and the Curtin Anti-war Group.

Professor of health economics Gavin Mooney described the federal government's lack of compassion towards people fleeing repressive regimes. He spoke of how refugees have suffered physical and psychological abuse at the hands of guards inside the detention centres.

Resistance member Jane Armanasco urged participants to join the refugees' rights movement, on campus and in the broader community.

Ruddock cops an earful

NEWCASTLE — Music loud enough to hear in Canberra belted out of the Palais Royale as six Novacastrian bands donated their time and talents to raise money for the refugee campaign on February 23. The Rock against Ruddock band night, a fundraiser for Green Left Weekly's coverage of the refugee rights campaign, attracted almost 100 young people from high schools and campuses in Newcastle, and raised $350. The bands who played were Cabin Fever, Conation, Bitchcraft, Favours For Each Other, The Rodgers and Creeping Jesus.
