Quiet! You'll wake the Australians!

Puerta del Sol in Madrid is one of more than 80 plazas across Spain occupied by "the indignant" -- demanding "Real Democracy Now

There's a huge anti-capitalist movement rocking Spain. If you're on Twitter the hashtag to follow is #spanishrevolution.

We at Green Left Weekly have enthusiastically covered the events and the protesters known as “the indignants”.

The movement has exploded into the streets; the central squares of cities and towns across the country have been taken over by a people crying out “the system is the problem”.

In response to the huge bailouts of the big banks during the financial crisis, and the savage cuts to government spending to pay for the bailouts, a rightly indignant people have had enough.

But if you only followed mainstream media, you could be forgiven for not noticing the mass rebellion breaking out across Europe. News and analysis of these events have been noticably absent from the monopolised media in this country.

As the threat of a good example spreads from Latin America, to the Middle East, and now to Europe, the mass media are doing their best to keep us in the dark. But the Europeans are on to this and are consciously trying to internationalise the movement of indignants.

One banner at a Spanish demonstration read: “Be quiet, the Greeks are sleeping.”

In response, Greek protesters marched with a banner reading: "We've woken up! What time is it? It's time they left!".

Greek protesters also carried a banner in French that read: “Silence! The French are sleeping! They are dreaming of ’68”. And another in Italian read, “Be quiet, you will wake the Italians.”

GLW proudly supports the “indignants”. We’ve set up a news bureau in Barcelona to be right in the thick of the action, so we can report eyewitness accounts of the struggle.

Unlike the mainstream media here, we want the people of Australia to wake up, to say “enough”.

Please help fund our European bureau, so we can continue reporting firsthand, by making a donation online today to the Green Left Weekly Fighting Fund.

So far this year we've raised $83,533 of our $250,000 target. With your help we can make it.
