BRISBANE — The Council for Civil Liberties has condemned state attorney-general Dean Wells' handling of the proposed new Criminal Code as a disaster and asked Premier Wayne Goss to withdraw it. In a 19-page letter to Wells, council vice-president Terry O'Gorman recently criticised many sections of the proposed new code, including those dealing with intoxication, actions done without lawful authority, offences against legislative and executive power, perjury, informers, bribery, the right to trial by judge and jury and appeals by the attorney-general.
BRISBANE — Garbage collectors would reluctantly work alongside an "anti-unionist" who sparked a two-day garbage strike, Transport Workers Union state secretary Hughie Williams said on February 28. But the man who refused to join the union, Graham Henderson, should give away to charity all pay rises gained by the TWU, Williams said.
Federal industrial commissioner Lea Drake on February 28 accepted Henderson's "conscientious objector" status and ordered the striking workers back to work, with a one-month no-strike clause.
