HOBART — The Socialist Alliance is half-way to the arduous task of Tasmanian electoral registration. In a blatant deterrent to political involvement, Tasmanian electoral law requires 100 members to be prepared to have their name and address published twice in Tasmania's daily papers. By March 9, 61 people had signed the registration forms.

"We have been heartened by the number of people who have been prepared to publicly state their support for socialism and their membership of the alliance", Socialist Alliance state convenor Kamala Emanuel told Green Left Weekly. "We believe it has been decades since a socialist organisation was registered in Tasmania."

"We are confident of putting in an application to register before the end of March", Emanuel said. "We are still appealing to people to join the alliance in order to help us get over the line. Getting all the way to 100 will be a challenge and every signature will count."

To help with the Socialist Alliance's registration attempt, contact Kamala on (03) 6234 6397 or 0417 319 662.
