A film is being made about Kamal Bamadhaj, the only foreigner murdered in the 1991 massacre of more than 200 East Timorese protesters by the Indonesian military at the Santa Cruz cemetery in Dili.
At that time, 20-year-old Kamal had been studying in Sydney and was passionately involved in many progressive issues, in particular Indonesia and East Timor solidarity.
New Zealand film-maker Annie Goldman has just finished filming a re-enactment of the US court case in which Kamal's mother, Helen Todd, sued one of the Indonesian officers responsible for the massacre.
The film crew will be in Australia from September 18 to 23. They will interview several people and plan to film the East Timorese choir Hananu Kore A'an during the Gracias a la Vida festival on September 19 at the Addison Road Community Centre, Marrickville.
