Brewery redevelopment stalled

By Stephen Robson

PERTH — The Legislative Council succeeded in delaying redevelopment work on the old Swan brewery on September 22 when it rejected an order that would have allowed the bypassing of planning and approval regulations.

The government and Multiplex will now have to wait an expected six to eight weeks while plans for the site go before the Perth City Council.

There is widespread opposition to the redevelopment, in support of Aborigines, who want the site to become parkland.

Labor does not command a majority in the upper house, and the conservative parties have sought to gain some cheap popularity over the issue.
