It is an open secret that Australian universities are underpaying casual academics. However, casuals and their allies, with the support of union officials, are fighting back by forming union member-led groups such as the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) Casuals Network.

Murdoch University is facing widespread criticism for its decision to seek potentially millions in compensation by suing one of its employees, associate professor Gerd Schroeder-Turk. Murdoch has also attempted to remove him from his elected position on the university’s senate.

Just days out from first-year Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) students beginning exams, University of Technology Sydney’s (UTS) Dean of Science Professor Dianne Jolley sent out an email saying the course was to be discontinued.

Staff and students at James Cook University (JCU) in Townsville and Cairns have refused to accept course and job cuts proposed by the university’s management.

The highlight of the campaign was a 120-strong student-led rally on April 30 at the Cairns campus, the largest student protest action in more than a decade at JCU. Students also joined the community protests called by the National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) branch on April 27.
