The one-year anniversary of the murder of Kurdish-Iranian woman Jina Mahsa Amini by the Iranian regime was marked on September 16 in Hyde Park at a “Say Her Name: Woman, Life, Freedom” rally and march.

Protesters held placards calling for “Freedom for Iran” and “Solidarity for Iran”. They also held photos of Iranians killed by the regime as the democracy movement gathered steam.

Speakers highlighted the courage of protesters defying the repression in Iran and called for unity in the democratic struggle.

Kurdish-Iranian woman Tina Kordrostami said the solidarity movement with Iran in Australia had grown, including with support in parliament. She called for “a free and just Iran”.

New South Wales Greens Senator Mehreen Faruqi said Labor must do more to support the Iranian democratic rights movement by stepping up pressure on the Tehran regime to stop human rights abuses.

The rally marched along Macquarie Street to Martin Place, near NSW Parliament, for more speakers.
