Refugee rights activists protested around Australia on July 19 to mark seven years since the Kevin Rudd Labor government sent the first refugees to offshore detention on Manus Island and Nauru said that no one who arrives via boat seeking asylum would be granted it in Australia.

Activists in Perth held a vigil outside the Fiona Stanley Hospital in Perth on July 20 to protest against the federal government’s cruel treatment of Sri Lankan refugee family Priya, Nades and their two children. Priya was transferred from Christmas Island detention centre to Fiona Stanley Hospital for urgent medical treatment, but was returned to the prison on July 29.
