Indian Pacific — Indonesia and the "Chinese Question" — "If trouble breaks out in Indonesia, it will be the Chinese who cop it." That's the view of a leading member of the Indonesian parliament. Resentment of Indonesia's Chinese minority simmers below the surface. In the industrial city of Medan in Sumatra, it recently broke out into violence when labour protests transformed into anti-Chinese riots. Most recently, the business person at the centre of Indonesia's biggest banking scandal was Chinese. Recently returned from a visit to Jakarta, Peter Mares presents a special feature on the "Chinese question". ABC Radio National, Saturday, September 3, 7.30am.

Radio Eye — Asylum: Port Hedland Detention Centre — The town of Port Hedland in WA exists for two primary purposes: as a port handling facility for the enormous iron ore industry in the Pilbara region and as a detention centre for people seeking refugee status in this country. Historically, many of these people have arrived "illegally" after long and hazardous voyages by boat from southern China, Vietnam and Cambodia. The location is ideal for the government, being 200 kilometres from the nearest town, with few journalists in the area and an international standard airport handy. Many people are held for years in the detention centre. Local couple Trish and Noel Young became known as "Mum" and "Dad" because they have attempted to offer a level of personal support and compassion which didn't exist elsewhere in the reception and processing centre. The program looks at the long-term effects of the detention strategy on all of those who come into contact with the system. Produced by Matthew Leonard. ABC Radio National, Sunday, September 4, 8.20pm.
