SYDNEY — Queer Notion, an organisation in the gay and lesbian community here, conducted an "outing" at a press conference opposite St Mary's cathedral on August 21. "Outing only works as a political weapon because there is a stigma attached to a particular behaviour", said a spokesperson for the group. The media had sensationalised the campaigns of militant gay groups, sometimes at the expense of truth.

Queer Notion sought to "out" from society queer notions such as the view of the Catholic Nurses Guild of Oceania that homosexuality is a treatable medical condition. To ensure media attendance at the press conference, Queer Notion had promised to out a prominent religious figure. The group outed Mother Abbyss of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
