Peace activists jailed

BRISBANE — Australian Plowshares activists Ciaron O'Reilly and Moana Cavander-Cole have been jailed for a year in the US on charges of sabotaging a B-52 bomber at Griffiss air base last January. They were also ordered to pay $1370 each damages.

The two, along with Sue Franknel and William Strait, attacked the bomber with hammers and blood-filled baby bottles on New Year's day in protest against the Gulf War.

About 120 supporters were forced to leave the court after interrupting proceedings by singing hymns. "Peace with justice won't come out of this courtroom but out of a community of resistance", O'Reilly told the court. Plowshares is a Christian peace group. n
