NICARAGUA: Teachers strike enters third week

Issue

On February 15, Nicaraguan teachers entered their third week on strike, demanding that a pay rise approved by the country's National Assembly in the 2005 budget be paid to them. After Nicaraguan president told protesting teachers to "shut up" on February 13, union leaders vowed to occupy buildings in order to win their demands, and refused to rule out a hunger strike.
