Making a killing I

"The most significant revelation of 'Executive Excess' concerned the growth in profits by companies involved in providing services, goods and military 'expertise' to the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Since 9/11, CEOs heading defense contractor firms have seen their pay increase by 200%. Halliburton, which holds 52% of Defense Department contracts in Iraq, has been among the biggest beneficiaries of the war in Iraq, earning $10.7 billion since 2004" — In These Times, reporting on a study by the Washington-based Institute of Policy Studies on US CEO salaries, October 3.

Just look at Halliburton's balance sheet

"The progress we've seen in Iraq has been superb." — US Vice-President Dick "Halliburton" Cheney, October 4.

Immoral authority

"I don't know if I have the moral authority to send troops into combat anymore. I'm no longer sure I can look [a soldier or a Marine] in the eye and say: 'This is something worth dying for'." — Senior US commander speaking "off the record" about the US war in Iraq to United Press International, October 5.

The other dead hijackers are on the run

"We've killed or captured nearly all of those directly responsible for the September the 11th attacks." — Emperor George Bush II, October 6.
