Education cuts hit Adelaide

ADELAIDE — A proposal to amalgamate the Elder Conservatorium of Music with the School of Music at Flinders University has sparked widespread anger.
Two hundred students attended a general student meeting on March 14 and spoke about existing problems in accessing the performing arts library, and the possibility that the amalgamation could lead to staff cuts.
As well, Adelaide University is proposing to drop the Vietnamese language course from the Asian studies department. It is the only such course in South Australia.
The general student meeting was the first in Adelaide for many years, but some students in attendance were very dissatisfied with the Students Association leaders' curtailing of real participation. Students were given a letter and told to send it to members of the University Council. They were then told that a campus rally would be held for music students, but that it would not be publicised among all students.
The student officials also failed to mention a national day of action against education privatisation to be held on March 22.
