Cuba is the only country in the world to meet the World Wild Life Fund's criteria for sustainable development, a conclusion confirmed by the recently published Sustainable Development Index which puts the country at number one, whereas Australia comes in at 160. How can a small country besieged by the United States' illegal economic blockade rate so highly in environmental and human development rankings? What does this tell us about the world economic system, and what lessons does this hold for us in Australia?
