Chinese arms to Burma

Reliable border sources have confirmed that on the night of January 9 and 10 approximately 100 Chinese army trucks travelled from Mang Shi in Yunnan province to Shwe Li in Burma, carrying military equipment. Witnesses on the Burmese side then that the equipment was transferred to a waiting Burmese army convoy.

This is further confirmation of information obtained earlier that China and the Burmese military government (SLORC) had agreed upon the transfer of arms and ammunition.

Arrangements for payment for the military equipment include payment over three years, permission for China to extract natural resources from Burma, and continuation of military training from China. The Burmese army is currently training in Chen Du, Sichuan province, reportedly in the use of sophisticated weapons.

In November 1992, two meetings between SLORC and Yunnan officials agreed to construction of roads and a hydroelectric station, and to other forms of cooperation. [From South-east Asian Information Network/Pegasus.]
