Darwin — An affectionate portrait of the great evolutionist Charles Darwin, beautifully directed by Peter Greenaway. SBS, Sunday, December 22, 8.30pm.

Hold Up the Sun — In the 1960s, decolonisation and guerilla struggles in South Africa impacted on the liberation movement, and the role of students came to the fore. SBS, Sunday December 22, 11.15pm.

The Cape of Fear — Filmed over a year in the ghettos of Cape Town, this film examines the "gangs" that have become the centre of the debate over crime in South Africa. ABC TV, Sunday, December 22, midnight.

The News Plague — A documentary about the falsehoods in international news presentation. In 1994 there were reports about a plague in India. With sensational coverage, including "live" film, maintaining that the Black Death had returned. A month later a discreet retraction was issued: there was no plague. My Father's Garden — This documentary tells the story of two US farmers united in their common goal of producing chemical-free food. SBS, Tuesday, December 31, 8.30pm.

Defenders of the Wild — A battle is being fought between poachers and rangers in the jungles of western Nepal, where some of the rarest creatures in the world live, such as the one-horned rhinoceros, the gharial or long-snouted crocodile and the river dolphin. SBS, Friday, January 3, 12.30pm.

Midnight Ramble — The little-known story of a remarkable, predominantly black film industry that produced close to 500 movies for African-American audiences between 1910 and 1950. SBS, Saturday, January 4, 12.30pm.
