Why

Demolition crews are coming for 82 Wentworth Park Road, Glebe. Almost all of the estate has been boarded up in preparation for bulldozing. But it is a perfectly liveable, 35 year old estate.

Demolishing public housing in an unprecedented housing crisis is criminal. Two years ago the Liberal state government evicted all the tenants in preparation to sell the land to developers.

Two years ago, activists occupied 82 Wentworth Park Rd, Glebe and saved the estate for two years under the NSW ALP government.

During our occupation in June 2023, through a tweet-policy statement, the NSW ALP Housing Minister Rose Jackson promised to NOT privatise NOT to sell off and KEEP the estate 100% owned and managed PUBLIC HOUSING.

Yet here we are. A week to two weeks away from a demolition of an inner city estate opposite a homeless community in Wentworth Park.

Because the ALP are no longer building public housing, we are certain Rose Jackson will renege on tweet-policy to keep the homes 100% public housing.

Like in the recently demolished Arncliffe estate example, the ALP will follow the Liberal party practices, sell off the land to a developer and build private and social housing.

Social housing is not public housing. Social-community housing is 30% of your income on rent, not 25% like public homes. It is run by so-called not-for-profits, so they don’t pay tax. But their CEO’s are on $300,000. Yeh, that kinda (wink-wink) “not-for-profit.”

Within the two years that the NSW ALP state government have let 82 Wentworth Park Glebe estate lie (mostly) empty they have also given eviction notices to public housing residents in Waterloo, Mascot, Maroubra, Kingsford, South Eveleigh estates.

Within the last two years the waiting list for public housing in NSW has increased by 6,000 people, to 67,000.

We are in a housing crisis manufactured by governments to benefit property investors and developers. We can still win. But we need your help. We are calling on the Glebe neighbourhood to join our protest.

We demand the government fill the estate with people on the waiting list, refill and refurbish it.

Organised by Action for Public Housing and others.
