Why

At this conference we will explore the ongoing struggles faced by the Kurdish people and seek solutions that honour their rights and aspirations.

Guest Speakers:

Nilüfer Koç, Foreign Affairs spokesperson of the Kurdistan National Congress Topic: The Treaty of Lausanne: Problematization of the existence of a people - the birth of the Kurdish question.

Prof John Tully, honorary professor at the College of Arts and Education at Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia. Topic: The historical background to the Treaty? That is the decay of the Ottoman Empire, World War I, the Young Turk policies of forced assimilation and genocide, the Treaty of Sèvres and the birth of the Turkish Republic.

Shukriya Bradost, political analyst and commentator on Kurdish and Middle Eastern Affairs Topic: The current and future status of the Kurds in the Middle East, particularly in light of recent geopolitical developments in the region.

Jino Victoria Doabi, Kurdish political scientist and analyst with expertise in international politics, focusing on the Middle East. She is a committed advocate for minority rights, with a particular emphasis on Kurdish human rights. Topic: Jin, Jiyan, Azadî and Identity.

William Gourlay, researcher at the Middle East Studies Forum, Monash University. Topic: The political circumstances of Kurds in Turkey.

Costas Laoutides, Associate Professor at Deakin University and a specialist in international relations, conflict resolution, and secessionist movements. Topic: Self-Determination and Collective Responsibility in the Secessionist Struggle.

Behrouz Boochani, Kurdish writer, journalist, and advocate for refugee rights. Topic: Opening Speaker highlighting the importance of the conference and the aims and objectives.

Vicki Sentas, Senior Lecturer at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Faculty of Law and Justice. Topic: The effects of the criminalisation of the Kurds across Kurdistan and the diaspora (focused on the suppression of the PKK and self-determination), including attempts to undermine the project of democratic confederalism and autonomy, and the significance of this political project.
