Join Get A Room to protest private providers of student accommodation as they use the housing crisis to rip students off.
Private student accommodation providers - Scape, Iglu, UniLodge - have hiked up rents hundreds over average unit prices. At Scape, a private provider in Melbourne CBD students may pay up to $300 more than the median price for equivalent commercial listings.
In Sydney, Scape’s median offerings include a 17 sq metre studio apartment for $769 a week. Sydney’s median unit rent is $663.49 per week.
For their part, universities have worsened the housing crisis by selling their limited accommodation to these private providers during the pandemic.
In 2021, the University of Wollongong sold two major housing assets. UTS sold three accommodation buildings for an estimated $95 million. The University of Sydney sold more than $70 million of property.
Student housing crisis is the product of a profit-driven accommodation system; it is not the fault of immigrants or international students. The right in society are trying to deflect anger at inflation and housing costs onto immigration and international students.
We are demanding:
+ Raise welfare now
+ Cap Student Housing at $100 a week
+ No Privatised Housing
Join this rally to demand affordable student accommodation and immediate action on the rental crisis.
