A refugee rights rally and march on June 26 — just two days after Julia Gillard displaced Kevin Rudd as Labor Prime Minister of Australia — sent her a message about refugee policy. Gillard's statement that she understood public "anxiety" over boat arrivals has led to fears of a further lurch to the right in what already inhumane refugee policy. Each year Australia takes only a few thousand of the 15.2 million refugees needing urgent resettlement yet there is widespread racist hysteria at every arrival of a boatload of desperate asylum seekers.
