Explosive documents reveal Santos’ Darwin LNG hub has been leaking methane for nearly two decades, and it was covered up. The facility has gone unfixed - a major threat to the safety of the Darwin community and Australia’s climate.
Freedom of information documents obtained by the Environment Centre NT show that Santos’ Darwin LNG hub has been leaking methane since 2006, fueling allegations of an industry cover up and systemic regulatory failure.
Methane is highly explosive if ignited, and over 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide in driving climate change. Regulators including Clean Energy Regulator, NOPSEMA, NT EPA, NT WorkSafe and CSIRO all knew about the leak but failed to act.
We’re calling for:
- Santos to fix the leak immediately. The faulty tank is a direct risk to the Darwin community and to the climate. Without urgent action, it could continue leaking for another 25 years.
- The Labor Government to investigate regulatory failures and legislate stronger rules requiring gas companies to measure, report, and repair leaks at the highest standards.
This is a major cover up. It shows again how the gas industry puts profit before people, safety and climate. Join us Wednesday to demand action!
