The new Adelaide University has stated that most students will no longer attend face-to-face lectures, which in 2026 will be replaced with “rich digital learning activities”.
The removal of in-person lectures in 2026 with the merging of the University of Adelaide and UniSA sees the loss of a vital learning tool and in-person connection for students on campus. The new Adelaide University is planning to transition lectures to pre-recorded videos and online content; cutting contact hours for students, axing jobs for lecturers, and destroying the quality of learning for all. Lectures provide an essential space for students to build friendships, engage with their teachers, and absorb knowledge more effectively.
The quality of our education is at stake. We are asking that the university adequately listens to their students, who should be at the decision table for the degrees we are paying for.
Demands
- Continue in-person lectures at the new Adelaide University - no axing of face-to-face classes
- Sufficient negotiation with university students and staff on the transition plan
- Transparency - clarification on exactly which courses are moving to online lectures
- Answers - what is happening to the unused lecture theaters?
