On January 28, 40 people gathered at Latin America Plaza, outside Central Station, to mark the 155th anniversary of the birth of Cuba's national hero, Jose Marti.

The event, organised by the Cuban consulate, was attended by representatives of the Australia-Cuba Friendship Society, Amigos de Cuba and other solidarity organisations, the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front, the Democratic Socialist Perspective and the Communist League.

Cuban consul Ifrahim Miranda Leon said that Marti's ideas and example of struggle for Cuba's national independence in the late 19th century were the inspiration for the Cuban people's ongoing struggle for national liberation, political freedom and social equality.
